Horizons September Giving Challenge

As another Summer Program has come to a close and a new academic year has begun, we have much to be thankful for at Horizons. Over the course of the summer we instituted many new partnerships which included…

• Increasing our reach to serve students in DC’s Ward 8 through newly established partnerships with the Bishop Walker School for Boys and Simon Elementary School,
• Leaning into health equity by ensuring more nutrient-dense meals through an innovative meal service partnership with fellow nonprofit Shepherd’s Table,
• Offering counseling and mental health services for our students through a partnership with the WISE Center and MECCA Group,
• And building a more intentional and impactful swim experience for our students

In addition, we hosted our largest roster yet for the second year in a row with 422 students enrolled across our three sites (an increase of 9% over the previous summer). Our students’ work was featured by the Phillips Collection and we culminated the program with our annual Swim Olympics and a 9th grade graduation ceremony at Howard University.

This is all made possible thanks to the support of our Horizons community. As we look to continue expanding this important work in 2023-2024, we need your help.

This week you have the chance to double your impact with a gift to Horizons Greater Washington. Thanks to two generous donors, all gifts made between September 25 - 29, 2023 will be matched dollar for dollar up to $16,000. That’s $32,000 that will directly impact every dimension of Horizons' programming and set our students up for success.

Here are some of the ways that your support helps to make a difference:

• $100 - Provides 10 students with environmentally friendly water bottles
• $250 - Provides nutrient-dense meals and a snack for one student during our Summer Program or Saturday Academy
• $500 - Provides counseling and mental health services for one day
• $1,000 - Covers the cost of a PE Instructor's salary for our Saturday Academy
• $1,500 - Supports a student in attending 18 Saturday Academy Sessions, where they will receive mental health supports and field trip experiences to round out their educational journey
